What Causes Food Cravings?

The general consensus among most doctors and dietitians is that cravings stem from a complex combination of emotional, hormonal and biochemical factors. Blood sugar imbalance is seen as the foundation for most cravings, but emotional and hormnal factors are also contributory factors. A small number of cravings can be the result of a food allergy - we crave the very food to which we are allergic! - and a few people still believe that we crave certain foods because our body is "telling us" to remedy a specific nutritional deficiency, although in view of the fact that most of our cravings tend to be for less healthy high-sugar or high-fat foods, this view is now less popular.
Emotional Causes
The most common emotional or psychological triggers for food cravings include: stress, depression, boredom and a general need for comfort. In severe cases, cravings can lead to binge eating and other types of eating disorders. If your yearning for certain foods is causing episodes of uncontrolled bingeing, you must seek help from your doctor.
Hormones
The fact that the strongest food cravings occur in the week prior to menstruation, or during pregnancy, suggests that hormonal swings have an influence on this type of urge to eat. Also, it's interesting that men - who typically are less affected by hormone imbalance than women - tend to develop fewer cravings.

Based on my observation, we do not always crave foods that are good for us. Stress, depression and a lack of sleep can cause junk food cravings. We sometimes may turn to "comfort foods" that we associate with pleasant feelings and overeat these foods when we are stressed, depressed or tired.

Stress
Depression
Anxiety

and other mental related disorders can cause food cravings.

I've had anxiety for almost 6 years and used to have long periods (probably months) when I didn't eat at all and other times when I had terrible food cravings especially when waking up.

Being hungry is one thing; you'll eat almost anything when you're hungry. A craving, on the other hand, is the desire for a specific food or taste, even if you aren't hungry. Most people experience food cravings at one time or another, but if your craving becomes an addiction, it's time to stop biting off more than you can chew and worry.

It’s your body’s way of taking in minerals/ vitamins etc that it is deficient.....so a craving is a sign that you are lacking in some area

Cravings may bombard your mind for many reasons, but hunger usually isn't one of them. Some causes of food cravings are dieting and comfort eating, in order to fight cravings, you need to eat meals regularly and drink plenty of water.

When you’re trying to lose weight, you may be nearly overcome with the urge to eat carbs and sweets. If you have tried many different methods to lose weight, without success, your cravings may well be wrapped into the overarching issue of weight loss resistance. Underlying imbalances related to your metabolism can cause you to hold onto weight even while you are actively trying to get rid of it, and cravings often accompany this process.
