What is Ketosis?

Postby dainejhone » Sat Jan 09, 2010 3:32 am

lot of people are confused by the term "ketosis." You may read that it is a "dangerous state" for the body, and it does sound abnormal to be "in ketosis." But ketosis merely means that our bodies are using fat for energy. Ketones (also called ketone bodies) are molecules generated during fat metabolism, whether from the fat in the guacamole you just ate or fat you were carrying around your middle. When our bodies are breaking down fat for energy, most of the it gets converted more or less directly to ATP. (Remember high school biology? This is the "energy molecule.") But ketones are also produced as part of the process. When people eat less carbohydrate, their bodies turn to fat for energy, so it makes sense that more ketones are generated. Some of those ketones (acetoacetate and ß-hydroxybutyrate) are used for energy; the heart muscle and kidneys, for example, prefer ketones to glucose. Most cells, including the brain cells, are able to use ketones for at least part of their energy. But there is one type of ketone molecule, called acetone, that cannot be used and is excreted as waste, mostly in the urine and breath (sometimes causing a distinct breath odor).

Ketosis is a condition in which the levels of ketones (ketone bodies) in the blood are high. Ketones are formed when glycogen stores are depleted in the liver. Ketones are used for energy. Ketones are small fragments of carbon that are the fuel created by the collapse of fat reserves. Ketosis is potentially a serious condition if the audible sound levels rise too high.

When glycogen stores are not available in the cells, fat (triacylglycerol) is cleaved to give 3 fatty acid chains and 1 glycerol molecule in a process called lipolysis. Most of the body is able to utilize fatty acids as an alternative source of energy in a process called beta-oxidation. One of the products of beta-oxidation is acetyl-CoA, which can be further used in the Krebs cycle. During prolonged fasting or starvation, acetyl-CoA in the liver is used to produce ketone bodies instead, leading to a state of ketosis.Bag sealer

Ketosis is nothing but a stage in metabolism where the body breaks down fat for energy. It is caused when the body breaks down body fat for energy instead of the usual glucose from carbohydrates.

Ketosis is a condition of metabolism in which the body produces ketones for use as fuel in some organs to glycogen can be reserved for organizations that depend on it. This occurs during periods of fasting, starvation, or during a ketogenic diet weight loss.

Ketosis is a state where the body is burning fat for energy and generating high levels of ketone bodies in the blood as a result. It is a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies which can be used by the body for energy.
