Low Fat High Protein Diet

Postby lvhongyu » Sun Jan 17, 2010 2:09 pm

Eating high protein foods daily can not only help to tone up the muscles, but also develop a well shaped muscular body. One advantage of high protein foods is that they speed up metabolism, which in turn helps to reduce weight.
However, one should be very careful in choosing high protein foods, as some of them are high in fats. For instance, sausages, although high in protein content, contain high amount of fat. Some of the high protein foods and low in fats are given below:
Fish
Fish is a great source of protein, but the way it it is cooked can influence its nutritional content. For instance, fried fish will in no way protect the health and can make a person susceptible to cardiovascular diseases. Instead, go for broiled or baked fish as they contribute to a healthy heart.
Eggs
Eggs are high in proteins, but removing the egg yolk and only eating the egg white is necessary as the yellow portion of the egg is high in fats and cholesterol.
Dairy products
Those in search of healthy food choices should prefer low fat dairy products. Skimmed milk and cheese, yogurt made from low fat milk are high in proteins. Cheese is high in saturated fat, so one must check the food label before buying these dairy products.
Lean Meat
Having lean meat, for instance skinless chicken is an integral part of many high protein weight loss diets. Chicken contains protein in high amounts but are high in fats. So, go for ground breast meat or food package that is labeled as low fat ground turkey. Eating lean cuts of beef is also a good option to consume healthy proteins.
Food Serving
Although, low fat high protein diet is regarded as nutritious, to overeat or binge will not contribute in losing weight. Eating immodestly is like inviting problems associated with excessive weight loss. Serving size has to be appropriate, otherwise it may result in over consumption of food. Having more than 3 - 4 ounces of meat, daily is not recommended as it can lead to obesity.
Nuts (almonds, cashew nuts), legumes, beans also belong to the category of low fat high protein foods and having them in sufficient amounts can enhance health. Keep in mind, grilling, broiling and roasting come under the list of healthy cooking methods as they do not strip the food from its nutrients. So, following a low fat high protein diet plan, as well as implementing these cooking methods, can definitely provide long term health benefits.

Chicken is one of the obvious choices, but it is so versatile and full of nutrition it needs to be included. The key with chicken is to make sure you remove the skin and avoid the dark meat.

Chicken is best, nutritionally, when broiled, roasted or baked. If frying, be sure to use canola or olive oil. A four ounce serving of chicken is 196 calories, has 35.1 grams of protein and 5.1 grams of fat.
