Vitamin C / Citric Acid

Postby olgaa » Thu Dec 10, 2009 6:53 pm

Please redirect me if this is not the right place for this question.

Our health food store sells Vitamin C and citric acid side by side in bulk, in identical glass containers. I asked the owner how one could tell the difference and she seemed, perhaps rightly so, offended. I pursued, asking if they were different in taste and was told that they do not taste alike. Well, I did the test at home and both samples tasted the same to me when dissolved in water. With Vitamin C at nearly $60.00 per kilo, I want to know how to make sure that that is what I am getting. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Grape juice is also great for one’s health, as it contains a great quantity of potassium and sugar. It’s wonderful for the nervous system, and is recommended in case of tiredness or even exhaustion. It can reduce the level of cholesterol, and also the heart pressure. Grape juice has also anti-bacterial, laxative, diuretic effects on our body

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron. For the hair, vitamin C improves scalp circulation. It maintains the capillaries that carry nutrients and blood to the roots of the follicles, thereby helping stimulate healthy hair growth. Vitamin C also promotes collagen production and helps in the absorption of other nutrients needed for healthy hair growth.

Ascorbic acid (E300) and vitamin C are one and the same, and are an essential nutrient for humans.
Citric acid (E330) and ascorbic acid both occur naturally in citrus fruits, but there is no vitamin C in citric acid.
Citric acid is responsible for the tart and sour taste of lemons, and to a lesser extent other citrus fruits and some berries.

Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid or L-ascorbate is an essential nutrient for humans and certain other animal species. In living organisms ascorbate acts as an antioxidant by protecting the body against oxidative stress. It is also a cofactor in at least eight enzymatic reactions including several collagen synthesis reactions that cause the most severe symptoms of scurvy when they are dysfunctional.
